Don't miss it-
The Last King of Devonport, which I went to see on Monday night in Devonport Guildhall, is one of the best pieces of theatre I have seen in a long time. More people should get along to see it before it closes. Not only was it excellent entertainment, it was a valuable history lesson too. A play that starts in the street outside the venue with a game of hopscotch, takes you on a tour of the building, locks you up in the cells, lays on a street party and finishes with a boxing match is something fairly unique in my experience and made this a great night out, but praise would not be justified if it did not also add the highest commendation to the cast and crew who ensured that local young people participated in this exceIIent production. One young Iad playing the role of the Lord Mayor of Devonport, carried out his task with all the pomp and ceremony of a real Lord Mayor.
As far as I know, his was an impromptu part with no time for learning lines or rehearsals. We all learned more about Devonport from this
show than anything taught from history books and it was great to have so many children and young people as the teachers! This play is about the pride that generations of Devonport folk have for their town. It made me proud to be welcomed as a resident of Plymouth.

More, please-
I WISH to congratulate the team involved in staging the Hidden City Festival, which ran throughout last week in various historical places in Plymouth. In particular, The Last King of Devonport, which was enacted throughout the cells and labyrinths in Devonport Guildhall, was absolutely superb. It was original and creative and gave the public who were present an opportunity to relive some of the activities that took place in these cells. Many community members involved in the Hidden City workshops prior to the festival told their stories and shared their memories with the team. Well done to the organisers, writers, producers and actors in bringing all this together. I hope there is going to be more.
